It’s a Crazy, Mixed Up, Shook Up World - Hmm...Where Did I Put the Dice...?

When I think about my future, I tend to envision financial freedom.  Being able to work at a rewarding career in which will make use of my overall writing talent and be able to refine and strengthen it.  This is why I decided to try and work as an independent typist for Type at Home.

What I like about Type at Home is the writing.  Upfront, if one does not like to write, this will not be for him or her.  The company itself provides challenging assignments which will sharpen one's writing skills in the focus of advertisements.  Even though I do not have any experience to speak of in this area, I will say that I have learned a lot about posting links and looking up information on various products.

Why Did I Choose Type at Home?

It is an honest desire of mine to be able to earn an income substantial enough to support my children.
When signing up with Type at Home, it was not with the intent of making $20,000 a month by doing two hours of work a day.  From experience, I have never had anything come easy in life and still do not expect it to.  The world itself is a corporate giant which dangles money from a hook, hoping to ensnare individuals with false hopes and promises.  This is not what I am promoting.

Even though I am nothing more than a nameless writer at this point, I would still like to share some of my more recent experiences.  I got married overseas in 2011.  I will never forget it.  It was May 13, which fell on a Friday.  Being far from superstitious, I laughed in jest on the day in which my marriage fell - And fall it did...  After about a year and a half, my then husband decided to desert my son and I because I was not making enough money for him as quickly as he wanted.  He would stay away for three weeks at a time.  After the second occurrence, I decided to leave and go back to the States.

I admit, I did not want to come back to the USA on the terms in which I faced.  Abandoned, no place to go and pregnant.  I would cry for hours when I thought about what I gave up in Namibia.  Technically, I wound up working as an editor and for me, held what I considered the ideal position.  I got to review manuscripts, critique work, and decide what was accepted for publication.  The other thing I grieved for was a book I had written which had been accepted for publication.  It became a lost project upon the return to Pennsylvania.

Shortly after my daughter was born, my son and I moved into the YWCA and lived there for about a year.  It was not the first time I had experienced being homeless.  The only thing I will say about the first time is I got an Associates Specialized Business Degree as an Administrative Medical Assistant with a minor in Medical Transcription.  We left Lancaster, Pennsylvania just before my daughter, lovingly nicknamed Poky after the Poky Little Puppy, turned one.

It was with the hope of a bright opportunity, in which we moved back to the general area of where my parents live.  The company where my mother worked was opening a new office in Quakertown and I was looking forward to the possibility of working with them.  Well, rejection reigned again, as well as more tears.  While still wondering what I was going to do, now that I had left the YWCA only with the possibility of facing homelessness again, I took my friend's advice when she was visiting us and enrolled in Kutztown University, where I am currently going to school for a Professional Writing major.  I know, big surprise, right?

Shh...Don't Tell Type at Home...Too Late!  They Already Know...

So what made me choose Type at Home?  If you made it this far, dear reader, and have not already guessed at my character from the bit of information being shared about my background, I am very much of a cynic and am hard to persuade.  In fact, one thing I will share about myself personally is that what I see myself being observed as is being too nice or flat out stupid.  I am not either.  Straight up, I am not going to waste words in effort to get a person to buy or feel like he or she needs a product if I did not feel he or she could benefit from it.

So what does my background have to do with Type at Home?  Nothing, yet everything.  Maybe it was out of desperation in which I thought I would give them a try.  Or...Maybe it is because I honestly feel within the gut this company is not a scam.  At this point, it is to early in the game to make a decision and even if I did, I would be like a pastor during a church service encouraging the congregation to check out the Bible verses he or she is basing the sermon on.

Is There a Catch?  Depends on What the Hook is Baited With.

Hook line and sinker, Type at Home has been in business for twelve years and is noted to be the highest paying per assignment.  True, it does cost join and receive work, but I noticed the costs are reasonable:

$29.99 for Part Time
$59.99 for Full Time
$89.99 for Business Owner

Working part time, the typist can earn between $25.00 to $45.00 per assignment.  This was the package I chose, since I did not have any experience.  I usually find it beneficial to start off small and work up.  Although the pay may not be the greatest at first, there is less headache as one learns how everything works and one does not feel as if he or she has bitten off more than he or she can chew.  After I get more experience, I will consider upgrading in position.

So far, communication between the staff and myself has been decent.  I appreciate their patience, especially Michelle, in answering all the questions which I have had up to now.

In a realistic sense, if this position interests you, be prepared to make mistakes and learn from them.  Think about comparing it to riding a bike.  The balance has to be found before one can start pedaling.  The more one does it, the easier it gets.

Once a person is familiar with the path he or she is riding, then he or she may think about a different opportunity.  Instead of turning right at the end of the block and staying on the comfortable route, he or she turns off on a dirt trail and takes a short cut.  Now the terrain is unfamiliar and may even make the rider feel as though he or she is learning how to ride a bike all over again.

There will be bumps, bruises, and possibly even blood loss, but in a metaphoric sense, is that not the same with every place of employment starting out?  When hired by an employer, one still has to go through a probation period and there is no guarantee he or she will make it.  Plus, what happens when the position turns out to be an oppression to the worker and he or she feels trapped?

What I like about Type at Home is I get to work at my own pace.  I'm not pressured to meet a deadline, but will admit that in order to see an increase in salary my completion of assignment time is going to have to come up.  This is what I am working for and even though it has taken awhile to complete this first assignment, I have noticed I am getting faster and more precise in finishing the articles assigned.

The most challenging aspect I face here is trying to work around Poky, who will be two in May.  As much of a jewel that she is, she is very demanding of my time and likes to get into everything.  My favorite episode with her was explaining one morning to her daycare that she may have fluorescent pink poop because of sucking a highlighter dry the night before.  So yes, she keeps my hands tied.

The other challenge is school.  Finding time to study, work part time, and be a single mom is enough to make my head swim.  Which is why it is a relief in working with Type at Home.  I do not have to worry about a dress code.  I do not have to worry about dealing with the public or uncooperative coworkers.  I do not have to worry about somebody looking over my shoulder or another peer trying to get me fired simply because he or she does not like the way I do things.  The other great thing is I do not have to worry about extra wear and tear on my vehicle or if I can get to work in time when leaving class.

Ready to Rip My Hair Out!

Am I frustrated with the learning process of working from the ground up with Type at Home?  Honestly, yes.  However, it has nothing to do with the company.  If I did not think that I was going to continue getting better, then I would have given up after the second article on the assignment list.  Plus this company has the upper hand in the sense of providing three key, important factors which appeal to me:
  1. Writing assignments.  I am a sucker for writing.  Because of pursuing a Professional Writing major, I am taking advantage of this opportunity to gain experience in my course of study.
  2. They give the assignment for me to do and back off.  Because of how long I have been working on this project, I admit I try to touch base with Michelle to let her know of my progress.  I think it is important to keep the line of communication open as well as build strong relation with Type at Home as an overall company.  Thank you Michelle, for answering my questions and pointing me in the right direction.  It is appreciated.
  3. The only person I answer to is myself.  If I do not follow through, it is on me.
Note for the Reader

If you are looking for a 'company bashing', so to speak, you will not receive one from me.  Some of the most disheartening things I see are biting remarks in effort to destroy somebody else.  Even though it probably does not matter to the business, it makes me wonder what sort of effort was put forth from the person's working ethics before writing the comment and arriving to the conclusion the product or position is not worth anything.  Before calling something a scam, one might want to consider having in depth knowledge to back up his or her claim.

Something else to think about before getting angry and stomping away is to understand there is no such thing as a perfect person or company.  True, some are better than others and one has to realize just because it does not work for him or her does not mean it will be the same for some one else.  Keep that in mind if you, dear reader, having made it this far and decide to look into Type at Home for further review.  As the writer, it is my main objective to provide what I know clearly in hopes it will come across as a worthwhile venture should you, as a prospective client, choose on your own to see if this will be something of benefit to you.  Even if Type at Home is not something of interest at this point in time, it may become of interest at a later date.  May you have nothing but success and prosperity in all of your endeavors.
